Why back pain is not the same for everyone and how to build a gradual return to activity.
Pain does not tell the whole story
Back pain is very common, but people with the same symptom can have different needs and recovery pathways. Assessing duration, symptom patterns, activities that change symptoms, sleep, work and previous episodes helps build a clearer picture.
In most cases, pain does not mean the back is fragile. Pain intensity and biological damage do not always coincide: stress, worry and a sudden reduction in activity can also influence the experience.
Stay active, gradually
When possible, keeping up tolerable activity and temporarily modifying load is often more helpful than prolonged rest. The right level differs from person to person and should be adapted to the response of symptoms.
Exercise and everyday strategies are valuable when they are sustainable, understandable and connected to a concrete goal.
An assessment provides direction
A physiotherapist can assess movement, strength, habits and factors that may maintain the problem. Following major trauma, fever, sudden loss of strength or other unusual symptoms, seek prompt medical advice.
